Press Release: Mexican Government Holds Up the Orphanage as a Model

Since opening its doors ten years ago, St. Innocent Orphanage has seen some major transformations--while other aspects of the orphanage haven’t changed at all. Located on a former horse ranch just outside of Tijuana, St. Innocent Orphanage is like no other orphanage in all of Mexico. A vision of Founder and Executive Director Greg Yova, the number of boys taken in is purposely limited, there is a significantly higher ratio of staff to boys, and care is continued well after other orphanages turn their charges onto the streets. Greg and his wife Margaret—who is just as dedicated as her husband—believe these qualities have helped them succeed at what they started out to accomplish, and gain the trust of both the Mexican government and community.

“The Mexican government was naturally cautious at first. We were foreigners,” Greg explains. “Now they hold St. Innocent Orphanage up as the model to follow.” The orphanage has consistently been rated at the top of all orphanages in the Mexican state of Baja (no comma) California, where more than 75 institutions exist. “At first, the Mexican community couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t send the boys off once they reached the age of 17,” Margaret explains. “No one else is doing it our way. But when they see that Brian, for example, is in his second year of pre-law school and completing an apprenticeship at the Tijuana Municipal Court, they are suddenly excited. They understand now. Even people in the U.S. who are familiar with group homes are impressed with the quality of our program.”
